The second Test of India's 2026-27 South Africa tour lands at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in mid-December 2026, indicatively starting on December 18. The series moves to the Bullring after a Centurion opener that historically dictates the tour's narrative. With direct WTC final implications and a India side that has not won a Wanderers Test since the 2017-18 visit, this is the fulcrum match. Altitude, lateral movement and a quick outfield make the Wanderers a fast-bowler's ground, and India's pace-bowling depth will be tested.

Day 1 timings

Johannesburg sits two hours behind India. The Test starts at 10:00 a.m. SAST. Multi-zone clock for the opening session below.

Two new balls per innings, four sessions of play including drinks, and an extra half hour available if 90 overs are not bowled by stumps.

Probable XIs

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep.

The Wanderers historically rewards three quicks and one frontline spinner; India is likely to play Jadeja for batting depth and lean on Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep with the new ball. Sai Sudharsan at three is the projected call after his Centurion 50.

South Africa: Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Temba Bavuma (c), David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.

Rabada will look to exploit the slope and lateral seam; Jansen brings the awkward angle from over the wicket. Maharaj is unlikely to bowl much on day 1 unless cracks open early.

Broadcast and streaming

SuperSport carries the series in South Africa as the host broadcaster. Star Sports holds Indian rights, with JioHotstar streaming live. Sky Sports has the UK feed. Willow TV in North America. SuperSport Caribbean covers the West Indies. FanCode does not carry this tour in India.

Weather and pitch read

Johannesburg in mid-December typically opens warm and dry, with afternoon thunderstorms a high probability. Expect the opening session to be cloud-affected with the new ball doing more than it does after lunch. The Wanderers track has trended a touch slower in recent seasons but still offers seam movement on day 1 and reverse swing from day 3 once the surface scuffs. Toss winner usually bowls.

What this Test means

A win for India here puts a 2-1 result within reach across the series and would all but lock a top-two WTC spot. A South African win at altitude flips the series and applies serious pressure on India ahead of Cape Town. Bavuma's side has lost two of its last three Wanderers Tests, but the home record over the last decade still reads better than India's touring one.

Day-one toss is at 9:30 a.m. SAST. Expect a contested start; this is the Test that decides where the series tilts.
