How the IPL Points System Works

The Indian Premier League uses a straightforward round-robin points system during the league stage. Each of the 10 teams plays 14 matches — some opponents home, some away. A win earns 2 points, a no-result earns 1 point each, and a loss earns 0 points. After all 70 league-stage matches, the top 4 teams advance to the playoffs.

When two or more teams finish on equal points, the tiebreaker is Net Run Rate (NRR). NRR is calculated as:

NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) − (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled)

A positive NRR means a team scores faster than it concedes. In close IPL seasons a difference of just 0.1 in NRR can separate a playoff berth from elimination, making every boundary and dot ball meaningful deep into the tournament. Teams that win by large margins protect their NRR, while teams that collapse to low scores suffer significant NRR damage even in victory.

IPL 2026 Playoff Format

The top 4 teams qualify for the playoffs in the following structure:

  • Qualifier 11st vs 2nd — winner goes straight to the final, loser gets a second chance
  • Eliminator3rd vs 4th — the loser is eliminated from the tournament
  • Qualifier 2Loser of Q1 vs Winner of Eliminator — winner goes to the final
  • FinalQ1 winner vs Q2 winner — the IPL 2026 champion is crowned

The top-2 finish is hugely valuable — it gives teams two chances to reach the final, essentially providing insurance against one bad performance. Teams finishing 3rd or 4th must win back-to-back knockout matches with no margin for error.

What Points Total Is Needed to Qualify?

Historically in the IPL, 16 points (8 wins from 14 matches) is considered a safe qualifying total. Teams with 14 points are on the bubble and depend on other results. Fewer than 12 points makes qualification extremely unlikely unless there are multiple no-results or exceptional NRR circumstances.

Our interactive Playoff Calculator above uses this 16-point benchmark to compute a qualification probability for any combination of wins, losses, and no-results you simulate. Bookmark this page and update your scenarios after every IPL 2026 match to stay ahead of the points table race.
