What Are the Orange Cap and Purple Cap?
The Orange Cap is awarded at the end of every IPL season to the highest run-scorer across the entire tournament. During the season, the live Orange Cap holder is the player with the most runs so far — wearing an orange cap during their team's next match to signify the honour.
The Purple Cap is the bowling equivalent — it goes to the player with the most wickets taken during the season. The live Purple Cap holder wears a purple cap at the start of the next match.
IPL 2026 Key Contenders
Orange Cap Watch
- Virat Kohli (RCB) — Won the Orange Cap in 2016 with 973 runs, a record that still stands
- Shubman Gill (GT) — Consistent performer since 2022, a top Orange Cap threat
- Jos Buttler (RR) — Back-to-back Orange Cap in 2022 (863 runs) and 2023 (588 runs)
Purple Cap Watch
- Jasprit Bumrah (MI) — Perennial wicket-taking machine and pace spearhead
- Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) — Won the Purple Cap in 2022 with 27 wickets
- Rashid Khan (GT) — Arguably the best T20 bowler in the world, always in contention
How Are Standings Determined?
The Orange Cap standings are sorted by total runs scored. When two players have the same number of runs, the tie is broken by the higher batting average, followed by strike rate. The Purple Cap is sorted by total wickets taken, with ties broken by bowling average (lower is better), then economy rate.
