IPL 2026 Captaincy Rankings: Tactical Grade for All 10

The IPL captaincy job has changed more in the past three years than in the previous fifteen. Impact subs, three-bouncer overs in some seasons, more aggressive powerplays, sharper analytics โ every one of these has moved the bar for what a captain has to know in real time.
In late April 2026, we have enough matches to grade all ten captains on the four things that matter โ bowling changes, field-set IQ, batting-order tweaks, and the captaincy multiplier on team performance.
How we grade
We use a simple A-to-F grade across four categories.
Bowling changes โ does the captain bring on the right bowler at the right moment? Does he avoid burning his best pacer in low-leverage overs?
Field-set IQ โ are the fields tailored to the bowler and batter, or are they default settings the analyst draws up before the toss?
Batting-order tweaks โ does the captain promote and demote based on match-up, or stick to a rigid card?
Captaincy multiplier โ is the team performing above or below the sum of its parts?
A captain who scores well on three of four is a top-tier captain. A captain who only scores well on one is being carried by the squad.
The full ranking
| Rank | Captain | Team | Overall grade | Strongest area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shreyas Iyer | PBKS | A | Bowling changes |
| 2 | Hardik Pandya | MI | A- | Match-up batting tweaks |
| 3 | Rajat Patidar | RCB | A- | Field-set IQ |
| 4 | Ishan Kishan (acting for Cummins) | SRH | B+ | Bowling changes |
| 5 | Shubman Gill | GT | B+ | Field-set IQ |
| 6 | Riyan Parag | RR | B | Bowling changes |
| 7 | Axar Patel | DC | B | All-rounder workload |
| 8 | Rishabh Pant | LSG | B- | Batting tweaks |
| 9 | Ruturaj Gaikwad | CSK | B- | Calm presence |
| 10 | Ajinkya Rahane | KKR | C+ | Squad management |
A few of these grades will move sharply by the playoffs. Captaincy is the most match-by-match-volatile rating in this list of writers' awards.
A-grade: Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer is the most complete tactical captain in IPL 2026. He has two qualities that separate him from the rest. The first is a willingness to break convention on bowling changes โ he will use his lead pacer in two-over blocks, hold back his enforcer for the 11th, then again at the death, all on the same night. The second is his fielding-set IQ at PBKS. He knows where every ball is going to be hit before the bowler runs in, and his rings move accordingly.
PBKS's captaincy multiplier is the highest in the league. They are winning matches that, on paper, they should not โ including the league's first-ever T20 chase of 265 against DC.
A-minus tier: Hardik Pandya, Rajat Patidar
Hardik Pandya's captaincy at MI in 2026 has settled. The early-career impatience is gone. He is comfortable letting the death-overs strategy unfold over a 60-minute window rather than reacting after every six. His match-up batting tweaks โ Tilak Varma at three, SKY at four, the floater at five โ are the cleanest in the league.
Rajat Patidar at RCB walked into the captaincy after the 2025 title triumph and has answered with the most disciplined field-set IQ in the league. RCB's rings move every two balls. Bowlers are protected; batters are squeezed.
His weakness is the bowling-change pattern. He still tends to fall back on his best pacer for the powerplay rather than holding him for the death, costing RCB a couple of late-innings collapses.
B-plus tier: Ishan Kishan (acting for Cummins), Shubman Gill
Ishan Kishan was thrown into the SRH captaincy after Pat Cummins was ruled out of IPL 2026 with a lumbar stress fracture. The early returns are encouraging โ he has kept Bhuvneshwar in the powerplay, used Hasaranga as a wicket-taker rather than a containment option, and managed the Bumrah-shaped hole that Abhishek/Head/Klaasen ran through against MI on April 29. The match-up batting tweaks are still cautious.
Shubman Gill's GT captaincy is the calm captaincy. He sets fields with care, makes bowling changes by the book, and rarely tries the spectacular. The result is a team that wins predictable matches but sometimes loses the wild ones.
B tier: Riyan Parag, Axar Patel
Riyan Parag is the captain who has surprised most observers in 2026. After taking over from Sanju Samson (who moved to CSK), he has RR playing with a positive identity โ they back themselves to chase, they trust their middle order, and they use their spinners as wicket-takers rather than containers.
His batting-order tweaks are still rigid. He could promote a left-hander against an off-spin opening over more often. The grade is held back by it.
Axar Patel's DC captaincy โ handed to him after Rishabh Pant's โน27 Cr move to LSG โ has been steady rather than spectacular. He is captain, all-rounder, and middle-overs spin enforcer โ a treble nobody else in the league is doing. His own bowling has rarely dipped, and his field-set IQ is excellent against left-hand batters. The bowling changes for the new-ball pacers are where he is still finding his rhythm.
B-minus tier: Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad
Rishabh Pant's LSG captaincy is hard to grade because his team is bottom of the table. He has tried to set calm fields, made the bowling changes you would expect, and batted with composure โ but the captaincy multiplier has been negative. LSG are performing well below their squad level, and the calls for Aiden Markram to take over the captaincy have started to surface.
Ruturaj Gaikwad at CSK is the new chapter. His calm presence in the dugout is in the Dhoni mould. The challenge is that he does not yet have the tactical creativity that made Dhoni's late-career captaincy unmatched. CSK have lost matches to teams whose captains made one bold tactical choice that he did not match.
C-plus tier: Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane inherited a Shreyas-Iyer-shaped hole at KKR and has had to work without an obvious tactical playbook. His bowling changes have shown flashes of intelligence โ using Narine in the powerplay against right-handers, holding back Varun Chakravarthy for the wicket-taking phase. His field-set IQ is improving.
Where the grade slips is the batting tweaks. Venkatesh Iyer at three sometimes, Rinku at five other times โ without an obvious match-up logic. KKR's batting collapse pattern in close losses traces back to it.

The captaincy multiplier in numbers
The captaincy multiplier is the gap between a team's actual win record and its expected win record from squad strength.
PBKS and MI are the two teams clearly outperforming their squad strength. RCB and SRH are at squad strength. RR, GT, DC are in a tight cluster around squad strength. LSG, CSK and KKR are below squad strength.
That alignment is not coincidence. The captains at the top of our grade are running teams that win above their pay grade. The captains at the bottom are leading teams that lose below their pay grade.
What the playoffs will reveal
The captaincy grade is the rating most likely to be redrawn by playoff cricket. A bold call in an Eliminator can move a captain from B to A in a single night. A panicked field set in a Qualifier can move an A to a B+.
The five captains most likely to redefine their grade in the back third are Shreyas Iyer, Hardik, Patidar, Ishan Kishan (acting for Cummins) and Axar Patel. All five run teams capable of going deep. All five will be tested against each other.
Dream11 angle
Captaincy quality matters for Dream11 because a well-captained team produces more high-leverage moments for individual players. Bumrah at the death gets more wickets when MI's field is set correctly. Arshdeep at the death gets more wickets when PBKS's spin pivot drys up the middle overs.
Lean your Dream11 captain choices towards players on A-grade-captained teams. The leverage moments produce the leverage points.
