What Is the Ranji Trophy?

The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket tournament, named after legendary cricketer Ranjitsinhji. It has been played since 1934–35 and is the backbone of Indian cricket — virtually every Indian Test player has come through the Ranji system.

Key facts:

  • Format: First-class (4-day matches) + knockouts (5-day)
  • Teams: 38 state/regional associations
  • Organised by: BCCI
  • First winner: Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1934–35
  • Most titles: Mumbai (41 titles)
  • Current champions: Jammu & Kashmir (2024–25 — their maiden title)

Tournament Structure

The Ranji Trophy uses a groups + knockout format:

Phase 1: Group Stage (League Matches)

38 teams are divided into 4 groups:

GroupTeamsTypeMatches per team
Elite A8 teamsRound-robin7 matches
Elite B8 teamsRound-robin7 matches
Elite C8 teamsRound-robin7 matches
Elite D8 teamsRound-robin7 matches
Plate6 teamsRound-robin5 matches

Elite groups contain the strongest teams based on previous season's performance. The Plate group contains the weaker or newer teams. Teams are reassigned to groups each season based on performance.

Phase 2: Knockout Stage

  • Top 2 teams from each Elite group (8 teams total) + Plate group winner qualify for knockouts
  • Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final
  • Quarter-finals and semi-finals: 5 days
  • Final: 5 days (at a neutral venue chosen by BCCI)

Points System

Each group match can earn teams the following points:

ResultPoints
Outright win6 points
First-innings lead (match drawn)3 points
First-innings tie (match drawn)1 point each
First-innings deficit (match drawn)0 points
Outright loss0 points
Abandoned (no play)1 point each

Bonus point: A team scores a bonus point if they achieve a first-innings lead and win the match outright (total: 7 points for such a result).

Tiebreaker Rules

If two teams are tied on points at the end of the group stage:

  1. Quotient — runs scored per wicket lost divided by runs conceded per wicket taken (higher is better)
  2. Head-to-head result
  3. Number of outright wins

Match Rules

Duration

  • Group matches: 4 days (minimum 90 overs per day)
  • Knockout matches: 5 days
  • Final: 5 days

Overs per Day

  • Minimum 90 overs must be bowled each day
  • Penalties apply if teams bowl slowly (loss of playing time)
  • Extra 30 minutes allowed to complete mandatory overs

DRS (Decision Review System)

  • DRS is available in knockout stages and the final
  • Group matches typically don't have DRS due to cost and logistics
  • Each team gets 2 reviews per innings

New Ball

  • Available after 80 overs (standard first-class rule)
  • Both teams can choose when to take the new ball after 80 overs

Follow-on

  • A team can enforce the follow-on if they lead by:
    • 200 runs in a 4-day match
    • 150 runs in a 3-day match (not applicable in Ranji)

Declaration

  • A captain can declare their innings closed at any time
  • Strategic declarations are common in Ranji to force results on Day 4

How Teams Qualify

Qualification to Ranji Trophy

Every team affiliated with BCCI is automatically entered. There are currently 38 teams representing:

  • 28 state cricket associations
  • Railways, Services, and other institutional teams
  • Newer additions like Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Nagaland etc.

Group Allocation

Teams are placed in groups based on:

  1. Previous season's performance
  2. BCCI seeding committee recommendations
  3. Bottom-placed teams in Elite groups may be relegated to Plate
  4. Plate group topper gets promoted to Elite

Selection from Club Cricket

Individual player selection for a state Ranji team follows this path:

  1. District/Club cricket — Play for your local cricket club or school team
  2. District selection trials — State associations conduct district-level trials each year
  3. State U-16 / U-19 / U-23 — Junior tournaments serve as the main scouting pipeline
  4. State senior team — Performance in age-group cricket leads to senior state selection
  5. Ranji Trophy squad — State selectors pick 15–17 players for each Ranji match

Pro tip: Most selections happen through the age-group system, not open trials. Getting into your district U-16 or U-19 team is the most reliable first step. Read our how to get selected for IPL guide for the full pathway.
